At just 22 years old, Carlos Alcaraz speaks with the wisdom of a veteran. His career has already seen him ascend to the top of the PIF ATP Rankings as World No. 1 for 66 weeks, alongside amassing an impressive 26 titles, including seven Grand Slams and eight ATP Masters 1000 trophies.
This week, as the top seed at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, Alcaraz not only carries the title of champion but also stands as one of the most seasoned home players alongside promising Spanish talents birthed in 2006: Rafael Jodar and Martín Landaluce.
“Rafa is truly an exceptional player,” the World No. 2 noted regarding his compatriot, who recently secured his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech and is riding a wave of six consecutive victories. “I’ve been closely following his progress, and his rapid ascent is remarkable.”
Alcaraz first encountered Jodar back in 2024 during the Spanish Davis Cup team sessions. “He took the initiative to be a sparring partner, which allowed me to train alongside him and witness his talent,” Alcaraz reflected. Their practice sessions didn’t end there, as they continued to hit the courts together.
“This year in Australia, I had the opportunity to engage in a practice set with him. The growth he has exhibited since then has been truly extraordinary,” Alcaraz shared. “I’m genuinely happy for him; he possesses admirable qualities both on and off the court, especially his laid-back nature.”
[ATP FANTASY]The two-time Barcelona champion (2022, 2023) expressed his supportive bond with Jodar: “I wish him nothing but success. Whenever he achieves something great, whether winning a tournament or performing well, I make it a point to reach out and congratulate him wholeheartedly.”
After confidently advancing to the second round on Tuesday against Otto Virtanen, Alcaraz emphasized that Jodar is part of an evolving generation of talents, which also prominently features Martín Landaluce.
“It’s beneficial for Jodar to have peers like Landaluce making strides, who is also an incredible player. I had the chance to practice with him before setting off to Monte-Carlo,” Alcaraz said. “I believe that this camaraderie will fuel both of them to keep progressing and ultimately make it to the top. Their futures are incredibly promising.”
For now, both Jodar and Landaluce couldn’t ask for a better role model than Alcaraz.
