Alex de Minaur has always been a source of motivation on the court. However, fans might be intrigued to discover the latest driving force behind the man affectionately dubbed “The Demon.”
Following his impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Daniil Medvedev, the Australian revealed that his upcoming marriage to British tennis sensation Katie Boulter is fueling his passion and drive on the court.
“To be honest, the main thing motivating me right now is trying to secure some substantial funds for the wedding expenses,” De Minaur expressed during an interview with Tennis Channel on Thursday. “That’s front and center in my mind—I’m determined to win as many matches as I can because venue costs are no joke.”
Relentless Pursuit of Greatness
On a lighter note, De Minaur made history by breaking into the Top 10 for the first time in 2024, which has only intensified his ambition.
Last year was challenging due to injuries, particularly a hip issue at Wimbledon that hampered his trademark intensity on the court.
Leading the tour with 19 wins already this season, the Sydney athlete is fully committed to maximizing his potential in 2025.
“I’ve got a fierce hunger and drive,” he remarked. “It’s always been there, but facing challenges at the end of last year pushed me to train harder in the preseason.”
“After the Turin event and Davis Cup, I took a brief two-day break before diving back into training. I kept pushing myself to improve and gain momentum. I realized my capabilities even when I wasn’t at my physical peak, so it’s crucial for me to return to optimal health and harness that momentum.”

The ‘Demon’ Thrives on Clay
De Minaur has put significant effort into solidifying his presence on clay courts as well. Previously struggling with a 15-20 record on this surface, he has impressively turned the tide, winning 16 of 26 matches since 2023, including a perfect start this year.
His newfound ability to generate height and angles has been pivotal to his success.
“The last couple of years have helped me learn how to be effective on clay,” he noted. “Initially, I was uncomfortable and ineffective on this surface, but I’m finally starting to get my bearings.”
Currently ranked World No. 10 and gearing up to face either Grigor Dimitrov or Alejandro Tabilo in the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals, De Minaur maintains his assertive playing style while incorporating caution into his rallies.
“The key difference has been my ability to create height and spin,” he explained. “My groundstrokes are heavier now. I’m focusing on opening the court with sharp angles and depth.”
“On hard courts, my groundstrokes are already effective because they’re quite flat, but on clay, I need to diversify my tactics to pressurize my opponents—using variations in speed, height, angles, and depth while remaining aggressive whenever possible.”
