Canada’s promising star, Victoria Mboko, advances to the third round of women’s singles at the Miami Open!
Hailing from Burlington, Ontario, the No. 10 seed showcased her skills by defeating Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova with a score of 6-1, 7-5 on Saturday. Earlier, on Friday, Mboko, who claimed victory at the National Bank Open in Montreal last year, dominated Anna Blinkova of Russia, wrapping up the match in just 59 minutes with a resounding 6-2, 6-0.
During Saturday’s match, Mboko delivered four aces despite battling five double faults, successfully converting three out of six break points.
In other action, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, the 26th seed, triumphed over Oksana Selekhmeteva of Russia, winning 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-1 in her first-round match.
Over on the men’s side, Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, the seventh seed, moved past Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics with a score of 7-6 (3), 7-5. The Canadian, who enjoyed a first-round bye, delivered six aces and made just one double fault, while Fucsovics struggled with six double faults against his four aces.
Unfortunately, Gabriel Diallo from Montreal faced elimination after a 6-1, 6-4 defeat against France’s Ugo Humbert late Saturday night.
Humbert, the 31st seed, displayed his prowess with three aces, 21 winners, and only one double fault in the 69-minute encounter, while the Canadian struggled with four aces, 12 winners, two double faults, and 22 unforced errors.
