On Tuesday, Ugo Humbert aims to break Jannik Sinner’s impressive 17-match winning streak at the ATP Masters 1000 level in a thrilling second-round showdown at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
A seven-time titlist on the ATP Tour, Humbert has consistently risen to the occasion at major tournaments, notably defeating Carlos Alcaraz on his path to the final at the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters.
We caught up with Humbert to explore his thoughts on tennis, delve into his favorite rivalries, and discuss the unique character development he attributes to his life as a professional athlete.
What’s your favorite ATP Tour event and why?
I love many ATP tournaments, especially those in France. The atmosphere is electric, and I feel the support from the French crowd. Outside of France, Halle holds a special place for me, as I’ve won there and have fond memories. It’s a lush, green paradise that feels like a holiday. For sheer beauty, Indian Wells is my top pick for Masters 1000 tournaments.
Have you ever considered how the French crowd impacts your opponents who aren’t from France?
Absolutely. For instance, when I played in Bercy, with 15,000 fans cheering for me, it could be daunting for my opponents. I felt this while playing against [Nick] Kyrgios in Australia as well.
Who do you consider your favorite tennis rivals?
I’ve always admired the rivalry between [Roger] Federer and [Rafael] Nadal, as I grew up watching their epic matches. For me, it’s the pinnacle of tennis.
Who stands out as your toughest rival?
I’ve had numerous encounters with Miomir Kecmanovic, with him leading the head-to-head 4-3. I also struggle against [Emil] Ruusuvuori, who is currently 5-0 against me. Those matches are always nail-biting; I’ve even had match points but couldn’t finish.
Can you share a standout moment from your career so far?
Definitely the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters. I was completely focused all week and reached the final—arguably my finest week, despite not winning the title. It was an unforgettable experience.
What’s the ultimate goal you’re chasing?
Winning a Grand Slam is my dream. Wimbledon would be incredible for me.
How thrilling is this pursuit?
It’s exhilarating! I put everything into it, working tirelessly. It’s something I dream about. Even if I don’t achieve it this year, I believe I can, and that motivation is priceless.
What’s the most significant challenge you’ve faced in your career?
The injury in 2025 was tough to manage. A broken finger sidelined me for two months, and it was the first injury I faced, which was quite challenging.
Is there anything you’ve experienced that you attribute to being a tennis player?
I feel like I have two distinct personalities; I’m not the same person off the court as I am on it. Without tennis, I don’t think I would have developed this duality.
