Toni Nadal has voiced his support for Jannik Sinner, taking aim at players who have criticized the current World No. 1.
During an event unveiling the participation of Casper Ruud, Nick Kyrgios, and Gael Monfils at this summer’s Mallorca Open, the former coach and uncle of Rafael Nadal shared his insights regarding Sinner’s recent three-month ban.
“I find it surprising that some players—especially those at the top—have publicly criticized him, even those who may not be in the cleanest of positions themselves,” he remarked, according to Marca.
Nadal firmly believes that Sinner is innocent and that his punishment was disproportionate. “I know Sinner personally, and he had no intent to do wrong,” Nadal explained. “You can’t punish someone for an accidental mistake. We shouldn’t rush to judge and impose penalties.”
“Sanctions should be aimed at those deliberately acting for personal gain. I’m certain that’s not the case with Sinner. He didn’t benefit from what was discovered, so why impose such a harsh penalty on him?”
