In a gripping showdown on Sunday, Tommy Paul found himself at the brink of defeat yet showed incredible resolve.

The American talent fought back from adversity, saving three championship points to secure a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. This marked Paul’s fifth title on the ATP Tour and his inaugural triumph on clay.

“Roman, you’ve had an incredible week,” Paul expressed during the trophy ceremony. “The level of play today was outstanding.”

“You’re showcasing amazing talent, and it’s only going to get better.”

In their first encounter on the prestigious Lexus ATP Head2Head series, Burruchaga gained an early advantage with a break in the deciding third set. He even held three championship points while leading 5-3 on Paul’s serve. However, the determined American saved all three, capitalizing on two errors and delivering a stunning volley winner.

Paul then rallied to win three straight games, clinching the victory in a dramatic finish. According to Infosys ATP Stats, he impressively saved 9 of the 12 break points he faced throughout the match.

With this thrilling two-hour and 40-minute victory, Paul continues the tradition of American champions in Houston, joining the ranks of Reilly Opelka (2022), Frances Tiafoe (2023), Ben Shelton (2024), and Jenson Brooksby (2025). At 28 years old, he also became the oldest champion in Houston since Juan Monaco, who was 32 in 2016.

Paul previously faced heartbreak in the Miami quarter-finals, where he squandered four match points against Arthur Fils. However, he made a remarkable comeback to claim the title in Houston.

In addition to his victory in Houston, Paul also reached the final at Delray Beach earlier this year, currently sitting in eighth place in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin.

Burruchaga, aiming for his first title, showcased impressive form, defeating fifth seed Brandon Nakashima and third seed Learner Tien in previous rounds, while only dropping two games in a dominant semi-final against Thiago Agustin Tirante.

His impressive performance at the tournament propelled Burruchaga 15 spots up the PIF ATP Live Rankings, where he now stands at No. 62.

“Kudos to Tommy, it was truly deserved; this final was exceptional,” Burruchaga remarked. “I am proud of my performance throughout the week and look forward to seizing future opportunities.”
