NEW YORK — Iga Swiatek kicked off her ambitious journey to capture both the U.S. Open and Wimbledon in the same calendar year with a swift victory, dispatching Emiliana Arango in just one hour, 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday.

The No. 2 seed showcased her prowess, winning 23 of 26 points on her first serve and dominating the court with a remarkable 26-5 lead in winners during the opening match of the day at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After nearly a week off following her loss in the mixed doubles final alongside Casper Ruud last Wednesday, Swiatek quickly regained her rhythm, delivering a commanding performance to start the tournament.

“It was definitely a solid match, and I’m pleased that I focused on being consistent rather than trying to overpower my opponent,” Swiatek remarked.

A second title at Flushing Meadows in 2022 would make her the first woman since Serena Williams in 2012 to win both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same year.

Additionally, Swiatek has the opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 ranking if she secures the title and Aryna Sabalenka is eliminated before the quarterfinals.
