Swiatek Takes Down Navarro 6-1, 6-2 to Advance to Australian Open Semifinals
In a thrilling showdown featuring the second seed against the eighth, Iga Swiatek, a remarkable 23-year-old from Poland, is on a quest for her second Australian Open semifinal berth.
In 2022, this five-time Grand Slam champion faced a heart-wrenching defeat against American Danielle Collins in the semifinals. Her journey last year concluded in the fourth round against the eventual finalist, Elena Rybakina.
Emma Navarro, hailing from the United States, achieved her career-best ranking of eight after an impressive run in the 2024 season, which saw her claim her first WTA title at the Hobart International. The Charleston-native made significant strides at the Grand Slams, reaching the fourth round at the French Open, the quarters at Wimbledon, and the semifinals at the US Open.
Currently ranked and seeded second, Swiatek had showcased her prowess by dropping just eleven games throughout the tournament, while Navarro battled through every round without dropping a set. This clash marked their inaugural meeting on the WTA tour, with Navarro opting to serve first after winning the toss.

Navarro faltered early, making two consecutive backhand errors and facing triple break points. Swiatek capitalized quickly, holding serve with ease to establish an early lead at 2-0.
Despite only managing 4/6 on her first serves, the eighth seed held serve to 30, while Swiatek encountered some unforced errors yet maintained her hold at 3-1. Navarro struggled in the fourth game, facing break points and ultimately dropping her serve after netting a backhand.
With relentless aggression from both sides, Swiatek continued to dominate, hitting a stunning backhand down the line to extend her lead to 5-1. Serving to stay in the first set, Navarro could not fend off Swiatek’s pressure, concluding the set at 1-6.
As the second set began, Swiatek served first with new balls but stumbled with four unforced errors. However, she rebounded beautifully, holding serve with consecutive winners, including her first ace of the match.
Navarro responded with impressive shots, leveling the score at 1-1, but Swiatek’s strategic transitions from defense to offense kept Navarro on her toes. Despite missing seven out of ten first serves, the Polish star showcased her resilience by holding serve after a dramatic crosscourt backhand pass.
Following a contentious moment with a missed call that went to video review, both players remained composed, with Swiatek consolidating her break for a commanding 5-2 lead.
Navarro, serving to extend the match, managed her first ace but faltered under pressure, succumbing to Swiatek’s relentless assault. This exciting encounter concluded with a scoreline that belied the fierce competition displayed.
Swiatek, boasting a flawless 5-0 record in Grand Slam finals, won 82% of her first serve points and saved the singular break point she faced, while also converting 5/9 break points with ease.
