Swiatek dominates Collins to advance to the Olympic semifinals
Collins forced to retire with Swiatek leading 6-1, 6-2, 1-4
Defending French Open champion and world number 1, Iga Swiatek, showcased her skills at the Paris Olympics as she aimed to add an Olympic medal to her impressive trophy collection. Despite being ahead in the head-to-head record against Danielle Collins, the 23-year-old Polish player was prepared for a tough battle against the talented American.
Danielle Collins, a two-time NCAA champion, had announced that she would retire at the end of the season, making this one of her best seasons since turning professional in 2016. Her recent victories in Miami and Charleston had propelled her to a career-high ranking of 7th in 2022 before currently holding the 9th position.
In a thrilling match, Swiatek took charge early, showcasing her powerful serves and skillful shots to secure the first set convincingly. Collins fought back but couldn’t match Swiatek’s intensity, eventually retiring due to an abdominal injury.
