ROME — Iga Swiatek swiftly bounced back from a challenging setback in her career, delivering a stunning 6-1, 6-0 victory over local favorite Elisabetta Cocciaretto during the second round of the Italian Open on Thursday.
After her defeat of 6-1, 6-1 to Coco Gauff in the Madrid Open semifinals, Swiatek shared that she was managing some “personal challenges.”
Currently ranked second, Swiatek is a three-time champion in Rome but has yet to secure a final appearance on tour this year. She boasts an impressive 21-2 record in Rome since 2021.
The Italian Open serves as the final significant clay-court event before the French Open kicks off on May 25. Notably, Swiatek has claimed four of her five Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros.
Looking ahead, Swiatek will face either Danielle Collins or Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who were set to compete later at the Foro Italico.
