In a thrilling showdown at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the No. 1 position in the PIF ATP Rankings from Carlos Alcaraz. However, this rivalry is just heating up.
Before the Monte-Carlo event, Alcaraz acknowledged the challenge ahead in defending his ranking against Sinner’s impressive form. And he wasn’t mistaken.
As the clay season progresses, Alcaraz must defend a hefty 3,330 points, while Sinner has 1,950 points at stake. With a slim 110-point advantage, Sinner is currently ahead.
Alcaraz, however, has a golden opportunity to regain the World No. 1 title next Monday. He’ll be defending 330 points in Barcelona, where he reached the finals last year. If he can secure victory at the ATP 500 event, he will once again swap places with Sinner on April 20. A trophy is essential for Alcaraz; otherwise, Sinner will hold onto his top ranking.
Neither player has points to defend at the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid, a tournament where Alcaraz boasts two titles and a commendable 15-2 record, as per the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. This positions him perfectly to rebound quickly before facing the pressure of defending 3,000 points at the upcoming Rome and Roland Garros events.
There’s also the possibility for Alcaraz to defend his titles from last year, where he triumphed over Sinner in the finals of both Rome and Roland Garros.
