Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov narrowly missed out on a spot in the men’s singles final at the ATP 500 Mexican Open in Acapulco, falling short in two nail-biting tiebreakers.

In a gripping semifinal that lasted two hours and 18 minutes, the talented player from Richmond Hill, Ontario, lost to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with scores of 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1).

Shapovalov finished the intense match boasting two aces, alongside three double faults and a remarkable 58 unforced errors. In contrast, Davidovich Fokina recorded no aces, two double faults, and 53 unforced errors.

The Canadian managed to save six out of ten break points and clinched four out of twelve return games. His first serve percentage stood at 54%, while his rival excelled with a 70% success rate—one of the critical statistics that distinguished the finalists during this hard-fought encounter.

Shapovalov converted 67% of his service games and won 33% of his return games, with Davidovich Fokina mirroring those exact statistics.

Now, Davidovich Fokina is set to clash with Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac in Saturday’s final. Machac advanced by overcoming American Brandon Nakashima with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
