As Aryna Sabalenka vies for a third consecutive title in Melbourne, she has an important mission ahead in Brisbane.

Pitting her skills against the talented 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, the world No. 1 looks to turn the tables after a surprising defeat during the 2024 Roland Garros quarterfinals as they compete for a coveted spot in the Brisbane final.

“Returning to Australia fills me with joy. It truly feels like home,” expressed Sabalenka, who is determined to reach her second consecutive Brisbane final. “The atmosphere is incredible, no matter the venue – be it Brisbane, Adelaide, or Melbourne, the energy is always electric. I’m thrilled to be here.”

“It’s a fantastic way to kick off the season, participating in a tournament leading up to the major event. I’m eager to perform well here and come back even stronger in Melbourne.”

Theoretically, the blue hard-court should benefit Sabalenka, a two-time defending Australian Open champion, in securing quick points.

During the summer on the red clay of Paris, Andreeva delivered a stunning upset, edging out Sabalenka 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 to claim her first semifinal berth at a Grand Slam.

Sabalenka, battling through considerable physical discomfort, almost managed to claim victory in that match. However, Andreeva’s resilience shone through as she held her ground amidst the intense pressure.

That unexpected loss ended Sabalenka’s impressive 23-set Grand Slam winning streak.

This upcoming clash marks their third encounter, and their first meeting on hard court, where Sabalenka has triumphed in 15 of her 17 career titles, including three Grand Slam victories.
