MONTREAL — In an intense clash at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina powered her way into the semifinals after Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk had to withdraw due to a troubling arm injury while trailing 6-1, 2-1 in the women’s singles match on Monday.
Rybakina, the ninth seed, showcased her skill by converting three out of ten breakpoints during the quarterfinal showdown at IGA Stadium. The players exchanged handshakes at the 54-minute mark before a visibly upset Kostyuk departed the court in tears.
Following the third game, medical personnel wrapped Kostyuk’s forearm in tape in an attempt to alleviate her discomfort.
Awaiting Rybakina in the next round is Victoria Mboko, who secured her spot with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Monday evening.
The National Bank Open, a prestigious WTA 1000-level tournament, continues through to the finals on Thursday, witnessing an unexpected twist as the top five seeds were all eliminated prior to the quarterfinals.
