During his second-round match at the ATP Challenger Tour event hosted by the prestigious Rafa Nadal Academy, 22-year-old Daniel Rincon experienced a moment of disbelief when he noticed Rafael Nadal in the stands while leading 2-0.

“I caught his eye and then lost six straight games,” Rincon chuckled in an interview with ATPTour.com, recalling how the nerves momentarily took over. “I got a bit tight there.”

However, Rincon quickly regained his composure, ultimately winning the match and later lifting the trophy in the very venue where he once trained and graduated in 2021.

As he approached the final, Daniela found Nadal watching again, though by then he had played enough of the match to focus solely on the game.

This victory at his former training ground, surrounded by family, friends, and the iconic champion Rafa, marked a profound full-circle experience.

“This week has been the best of my life, hands down. Nothing else compares,” stated the No. 209 player in the PIF ATP Rankings. “I had envisioned winning here, but the reality surpassed anything I imagined. It was completely surreal.”

Rincon’s journey through the Challenger circuit has been nothing short of memorable. His first title in Tampere, Finland, came with an unexpected twist—his luggage went missing. He had to compete with only three racquets while borrowing strings and grips.

“I felt like an amateur, showing up with a small bag, just three t-shirts, doing laundry every day,” he joked at the time. “It was a bit chaotic!”

In Manacor, Rincon exhibited remarkable resilience, staging comebacks from 2-5 down in the final set of his initial two matches and needing a deciding set to push through to the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Even though he didn’t have the opportunity to converse with the legendary Nadal during the tournament, his presence undeniably added to the magic of Rincon’s week.

It All Adds Up

“When I knew he was attending, I couldn’t help but peek for him,” Rincon shared. “Some people close to him had filled me in about his schedule.”

His connection with the Rafa Nadal Academy runs deep; he first arrived at the cutting-edge facility at just 16 years old in September 2019. How fitting it was for him to triumph at this very event years later!

Reflecting on his journey, Rincon said, “Who would have imagined that the young kid with two suitcases at 16 would one day compete in a final here?”
