Dona Vekic showcased a blend of determination and focus as she stepped onto the court for her Australian Open debut.

Guided by her fierce forehand, Vekic notched her first victory of the year.

After reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2024, Vekic triumphed over Diane Parry with a score of 6-4, 6-4, advancing to the second round of the Australian Open for the eighth time.

Training in Los Angeles during the offseason, Vekic expressed concern for her coach, Pam Shriver, who remains in Southern California amidst the ongoing fires.

“It’s a really tough situation for her,” Vekic commented on Shriver’s circumstances. “Her home is fine for now, but many have lost everything—it’s tragic.”

“We were there just two weeks ago for our pre-season, so witnessing this is surreal. We truly miss her presence here.”

While Shriver is away, coach Sascha Bajin, who has previously guided players like Naomi Osaka, Dayana Yastremska, and Alycia Parks, is now by Vekic’s side, infusing her training with vibrant energy.

“He brings immense intensity and good vibes,” Vekic shared about Bajin. “We had a fantastic pre-season, and after losing my first three matches, I was quite frustrated. We trained so hard, and I felt ready. But regardless of today’s outcome, I believe he’s a phenomenal coach with a wealth of experience, and I have high hopes for our journey together.”
