Pegula Triumphs Over Jovic: A Path to the Charleston Open Final!
In an exhilarating all-American semifinal, seasoned player Jessica Pegula clashed with rising star Iva Jovic. The defending champion and top seed, Pegula, faced off against the eighteen-year-old sensation, who represents the promising future of tennis.
Jovic, hailing from California, has already climbed to a career-high ranking of #16 in just her second season on the tour. Making her debut at this tournament, she impressively reached her first clay-court semifinal without dropping a single set.
Pegula, conversely, had encountered a challenging journey, battling through tough matches in every round. This marked their second encounter of the season, with Pegula having previously defeated Jovic in straight sets during the Dubai tournament earlier this year. After winning the toss, Jovic opted to serve and successfully held her opening game, while Pegula struggled with her first serve, leading to an early break.
After facing seven deuces and break points, Jovic showcased her exceptional skills with a stunning backhand to clinch her first game point. Despite a double fault and more pressure, she consolidated the break when Pegula faltered with consecutive errors.

The defending champion made a striking comeback in the fourth game with two impressive forehand winners, finally getting on the scoreboard. However, Jovic, keen to dominate, faltered again, committing another double fault and losing her serve after two unforced errors.
Pegula, battling through, faced double break points yet managed to hold for a level score of 3–3. Jovic then reached 4–3 with a fantastic cross-court forehand, while Pegula, serving with new balls, faced multiple challenges before settling with an extraordinary inside-out forehand.
As the set progressed, Jovic faced a time warning and struggled to maintain her composure, dropping serve amidst a flurry of errors. Pegula seized her opportunity, missing a few serves but taking the set due to consecutive mistakes from her opponent.
In the second set, Jovic served first and established an early lead, but Pegula responded powerfully, showing her resilience. The set became a back-and-forth contest, with both players exhibiting skillful shot-making and battling for every point.
Jovic managed to hold her nerves in crucial moments, while Pegula fought valiantly to stay in the match. The level of intensity soared as the players exchanged holds, culminating in riveting rallies.
As frustration mounted for Pegula, Jovic took advantage and sealed the second set with a formidable forehand, leading to a deciding third set.
During the final set, Jovic initially held her serve but soon faced adversity as Pegula’s game sharpened. After some turbulence in their respective games, Pegula found her rhythm and took control, breaking Jovic’s serve decisively.
As the match edged towards its conclusion, Pegula showcased mental toughness, sealing her victory despite the challenging journey. With a scoreline of 6–4, 5–7, 6–3, she secured her place in the final against an unexpected opponent.
In her post-match press conference, Pegula reflected on her strategic play, noting her focus on drawing errors and strategically outmaneuvering Jovic. She emphasized her approach of making opponents uncomfortable to gain the upper hand.
Pegula is set to face Yuliia Starodubtseva, currently ranked #89, in the championship match. The twenty-six-year-old Ukrainian stunned former world #5 Madison Keys to claim her spot in the final, marking her tournament debut.
This championship clash will be their first encounter, with a coveted trophy and 500 ranking points at stake. Stay tuned for what promises to be a thrilling showdown!
