Paul Defeats Canada’s Diallo in Straight Sets at Mexican Open Opener

ACAPULCO, Mexico — In a commanding performance, third-seeded American Tommy Paul swiftly dispatched Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo in the first round of the ATP 500 Mexican Open on Monday evening.

Paul required just 72 minutes to secure a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory, propelling him into the second round. There, he’s set to clash with fellow American Marcos Andre Giron, who triumphed over Australia’s Adam Walton with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-2.

In the match against Paul, Diallo recorded four aces and struggled with two double faults, accumulating a total of 26 unforced errors. He converted 61% of his first serve points but could only manage a 48% success rate on his second serves.

On the other hand, Paul did not register any aces but had three double faults and 18 unforced errors. He showcased solid serving, winning 66% of his first serve points and 64% on second serves.

Looking ahead, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, is set to kick off his men’s singles campaign on Tuesday, where he will face American Nishesh Basavareddy.
