Cameron Norrie showcased his resilience on Monday at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, fending off a thrilling late surge from 41-year-old Stan Wawrinka.

After missing the chance to clinch the match at 5-4 in the second set, Norrie ultimately secured a nail-biting victory with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4 after two hours and 33 minutes. Wawrinka, in his farewell season on the ATP Tour, impressed with 38 winners but will rue his 59 unforced errors in what was his final appearance in Barcelona.

“I had a strong position at a set and 5-4,” Norrie reflected. “I played a bit cautiously on a couple of shots and felt the pressure during the tie-break. I should have closed it out, but hats off to him. I really elevated my game in the third set, digging deep mentally and finding my rhythm.”

Currently ranked World No. 24, Norrie progresses to the second round in Barcelona for the fifth time in six tournaments. Next, he will take on American qualifier Ethan Quinn, who earlier ousted Reilly Opelka with a close score of 7-5, 7-6(7). This matchup will mark their first encounter on the Lexus ATP Head2Head circuit.

Meanwhile, Tomas Martin Etcheverry also advanced to the next round after Jack Draper retired from their match after 1 hour and 45 minutes, with Etcheverry leading 4-1 in the deciding set. The Argentine has dominated the clay-court season, leading the Tour with 13 wins, highlighted by his first ATP title in Rio de Janeiro this February.

Kicking off Monday’s action on Pista Rafa Nadal, Corentin Moutet secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ignacio Buse, electrifying the audience as he clinched his first match point after a tenacious defensive exchange. Currently enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 31 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Moutet is set to face either second seed Lorenzo Musetti or local wild card Martin Landaluce in his next challenge.
