Three eras. One surface. A standard so high that only a select few members of the ATP No. 1 Club have risen to the challenge.

With the clay court season kicking off at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, three legendary club members have historically shone brighter than the rest: Rafael Nadal, Bjorn Borg, and Carlos Alcaraz. Diverse styles across generations have led them to set remarkable benchmarks on clay.

Nadal, the king with a record 14 Roland Garros titles, boasts a staggering 90.5% winning percentage on clay—the best in the Open Era. Borg, the timeless baseline artist, achieved 86.1%, while the young prodigy Alcaraz, at just 22, has reached an impressive 84.4%, as per the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

Borg’s six Roland Garros titles from 1974 to 1981 once stood as a testament to clay dominance, but Nadal has shattered that record with 14 championships. Meanwhile, Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion and fresh Monte-Carlo victor, comes off a stellar 2025 clay campaign, amassing a 22-1 record.

The Monte-Carlo Masters serves as a barometer for the season ahead. Nadal claimed this title a record 11 times, including eight consecutive victories from 2005 to 2012. Alcaraz, known for his explosive agility and imaginative shot-making, looks to harness this momentum for the European clay swing ahead.

Other prestigious members like Ivan Lendl and Novak Djokovic have also made their mark on the clay courts. Lendl, with an 81% winning ratio, secured 28 clay titles, including three at Roland Garros.

ATP No. 1 Club

As a three-time Roland Garros champion, Djokovic closely follows with an impressive 80.4% winning percentage on clay. He memorably triumphed over both Nadal and Alcaraz to earn gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics and recently celebrated his 100th tour title in Geneva on this surface, including 11 of his record 40 ATP Masters 1000 wins.

The link between Borg’s icy composure, Nadal’s vigorous top spin, and Alcaraz’s dynamic flair is clear. Clay demands patience, resilience, and tactical prowess, proving critical over five taxing sets in Paris or during the lengthy afternoons in Monte-Carlo. The legacy and benchmarks remain entrenched in their achievements, trophies, and the illustrious history of the ATP No. 1 Club.
