The highly anticipated first-round Davis Cup qualifier is set to take place between Canada and Hungary at the renowned IGA Stadium in Montreal, as officially announced by Tennis Canada on Monday.

Scheduled for February 1-2, this electrifying best-of-five tie will unfold on the indoor hardcourt. The victorious team will earn a spot in the second round of qualifiers this coming September, while the losing side will face relegation to the World Group 1 level.

“There’s an indescribable joy in representing Canada and feeling the energy of our home crowd,” expressed team captain Frank Dancevic. “We’re eager to harness the support of Montreal’s fans as we prepare for what will surely be a challenging encounter against a formidable Hungarian team.”

Canada clinched its maiden Davis Cup title in 2022 and has reached the quarterfinals—now known as the Final 8—over the last two years.

Last February, Montreal was the backdrop for Canada’s first-round qualifying match, where they triumphed over South Korea with a score of 3-1. Impressively, Canada has secured victories in nine of their last ten home ties.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting another exciting Davis Cup event and returning to the iconic IGA Stadium in Montreal,” stated tournament director Valerie Tetreault.

Currently, Canada ranks third in the Davis Cup standings, while Hungary is positioned at 22nd. Notably, this matchup marks the first encounter between the two teams in Davis Cup history.

The competition will kick off with two singles matches on February 1, followed by a doubles match and two additional singles matches scheduled for February 2.

In a previous encounter last month in Malaga, Spain, Canada faced a defeat against Germany, with Daniel Altmaier besting Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo 7-6 (5), 6-4 and Jan-Lennard Struff narrowly outpacing Richmond Hill’s Denis Shapovalov with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

The champions of the second-round qualifiers will join host nation Italy in the 2025 Final 8 set for November.

Italy recently secured its second consecutive Davis Cup title, achieving a decisive 2-0 victory over the Netherlands.
