At 38, Gael Monfils continues to age like a fine vintage, reminiscent of a refinement akin to Château Margaux 1986.
The French maestro showcased his prowess on Sunday in Miami, battling to a thrilling victory over Jaume Munar with scores of 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(1), thus becoming the oldest player ever to progress to the round of 16 in Miami.

Monfils, who began his season in Auckland as the oldest player to clinch an ATP title, now boasts a record of 14-4 this season. He weathered an intense clash with the 27-year-old Munar in front of an electrified Court Butch Buchholz crowd.
With three consecutive three-set victories under his belt, including back-to-back tiebreak wins in the final set, his legs seem far from weary.
This former World No. 6 continues to captivate audiences, delivering a spectacular blend of artistry, athleticism, and unmistakable charm.
Now unseeded, Monfils will face off against the 24th-seeded Sebastian Korda in the fourth round this Tuesday, having defeated the American in straight sets only weeks ago at Indian Wells.
If Monfils aims to secure the title of oldest player to reach the fourth round at a Masters 1000 event, he’ll need to hang around a bit longer; the current record is held by Ivo Karlovic, who achieved this milestone at 40 during the 2019 Indian Wells.
