Jakub Mensik is making headlines!
Fresh off his first Masters 1000 title in Miami just four weeks ago, the 19-year-old showcased his talent by defeating Ben Shelton with a score of 6-1, 6-4, advancing to the round of 16 at Madrid for the first time.
What’s it like for Mensik, who now finds himself shifting from being the challenger to the one being chased, especially after that memorable title run capped off by a straight-sets win over Grand Slam legend Novak Djokovic?
“I understand it’s just one tournament, and I’m focused on improving week by week,” he noted. “Winning was fantastic, but the road ahead is still long, and my ambitions extend further.”

On an impressive eight-match winning spree at the Masters 1000 events, Mensik now stands at 6-1 against Top-20 players in 2025, showcasing his prowess in a swift 67-minute match against Shelton, who struggled to find his rhythm in their third encounter.
Ranked 23rd, Mensik will take on Alexander Bublik in the round of 16 on Tuesday, entering the match with a favorable 16-7 record. Earlier this year, he triumphed over Bublik in Rotterdam, holding a 1-1 head-to-head record against the World No. 75.
Mensik joins an elite group of teenagers, becoming the seventh to reach the round of 16 in Madrid, a list that also features legends like Carlos Alcaraz, Juan Martin del Potro, Denis Shapovalov, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.
