Even a highly-ranked player like Musetti occasionally has to admit, “He was just too good.”

This was the sentiment expressed by Lorenzo Musetti following his quarter-final match against Jannik Sinner at the US Open. After a slow start, Musetti struggled to regain his rhythm, eventually succumbing to Sinner, the World No. 1 and defending champion, who has only conceded one set throughout the tournament.

“In the first set, I felt rushed,” Musetti reflected in the post-match press conference. “Adapting to the night session was challenging, as it was a new experience for me. It felt different from my previous daytime matches.”

“It’s clear that Jannik was operating on a different level. The second set was when I served better and had more opportunities. I had a break point that I couldn’t convert—against a player like him, you must seize every chance.”

It All Adds Up

With a commanding 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Musetti at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sinner improved his head-to-head record against his friend to 3-0. This encounter offered Musetti a firsthand glimpse of Sinner’s remarkable form; their last match occurred at the 2023 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters quarter-finals.

“Significant changes have taken place since our last match,” Musetti noted. “We have both matured as players. I’ve never faced anyone who could push me like Jannik, and it was tough to find my footing during the rallies.”

“I was genuinely impressed by Jannik’s performance today. His serve was exceptional, and he pushed me to my limits. He clearly demonstrated he is the superior player. However, playing against him has given me insights into areas for improvement. I look forward to the chance to challenge him again soon.”

Though Musetti faced a quarter-final exit, his performance in New York has significantly enhanced his chances for a debut at the Nitto ATP Finals. The 23-year-old has climbed to eighth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, intensifying his pursuit of a spot in the prestigious season finale this November.
