Jannik Sinner is only one set away from rewriting the history books at the Miami Open presented by Itau.

The current No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings equaled Novak Djokovic’s record of 24 consecutive sets won at the Masters 1000 level with a confident 6-3, 6-3 victory over Damir Dzumhur on Saturday. Amidst a sea of legendary players in the Masters 1000 arena since its inception in 1990, the 24-year-old Italian finds himself in a position to create an unassailable winning streak.

Sinner’s incredible journey through the Masters 1000 has seen him lose an average of just over three games per set while defeating four Top 10 players, starting with his title at the Rolex Paris Masters last November. His perfection continued at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this month. Now, he aims to surpass Djokovic by taking the first set in his third-round face-off with the 30th seed, Corentin Moutet.

Sharing similarities with Sinner’s impressive streak, Djokovic’s own run of 24 perfect sets in early 2016 culminated in two titles. The then-World No. 1 commenced his streak with a comeback victory over Bjorn Fratangelo in Indian Wells, winning the trophy without losing another set. He continued this dominance by clinching the ‘Sunshine Double’ for an unprecedented fourth time in Miami without dropping a set. Djokovic’s astonishing streak came to an end at that year’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, where he faced defeat against Jiri Vesely.

The BNP Paribas Open also witnesses the third and fourth longest set-winning sequences on record. In 2023, Carlos Alcaraz completed a flawless campaign to win Indian Wells, extending his consecutive sets tally to 21 before falling to Sinner in the Miami final. Additionally, Djokovic’s 19-set winning streak began with a flawless run to the Paris-Bercy title the previous year, only to be interrupted by Roger Federer in the Indian Wells final, although Djokovic reversed the match to secure the title in California.

The longest Masters 1000 set-winning streak involving clay was achieved by Andy Murray in 2016. The British star dominated with 18 consecutive wins, beginning at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, where he captured the title without losing a set. He followed up with four more straight-set victories on the hard courts of the Cincinnati Open before ultimately falling to Marin Cilic in the final.
