ABU DHABI — Leylah Fernandez from Canada made a spectacular entry into the quarterfinals of the Abu Dhabi Open tennis tournament, delivering an impressive performance with a flawless 6-0, 6-3 victory over New Zealand’s Lulu Sun on Wednesday.
As the eighth seed in the tournament, Fernandez showcased her skills by winning 70.8% of her service points and successfully staving off all three break points she encountered, completing the match in just one hour and 12 minutes.
Despite Sun registering seven aces, she only managed to secure 47.1% of her service points and was broken four times out of twelve opportunities.
Ranked 27th in the WTA rankings, the 22-year-old sensation from Laval, Quebec, improved her season record to 7-3 as she secured her spot in her first quarterfinal of 2025.
Fernandez is set to face world No. 51 Ashlyn Krueger next, who clinched her place in the next round after a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 victory over American McCartney Kessler.
The duo faced each other twice last year, with Fernandez emerging victoriously in their first encounter at the Eastbourne International before reaching the finals, while Krueger managed to turn the tables in the second round of the National Bank Open in Toronto.
