Emerging as a #NextGenATP sensation, Learner Tien marked his place in history as the ninth first-time ATP Tour champion this season during his enthralling victory at the Moselle Open.
With a stunning win over Cameron Norrie in the final, Tien also made his thrilling debut in the Top 30 of the PIF ATP Rankings. His victory positions him as the first American teenager to capture a tour-level title since Andy Roddick, who was 19 in 2002.
The prestigious ATP 250 win adds to an already remarkable season for the left-handed star. After finishing as runner-up at the Next Gen ATP Finals last year, he has secured five victories over Top 10 opponents and reached his first tour-level final at the ATP 500 in Beijing, where he fought bravely against Jannik Sinner.
ATPTour.com caught up with Tien to reflect on his journey, title win, and more…
How significant is your first ATP Tour title win?
It means everything to me. Coming into this season, it was a major goal of mine. Achieving it in the final week of the year feels incredible!
Who has played a pivotal role in your success?
I haven’t had many coaches, but I’ve been lucky to have some amazing mentors throughout my life. They’ve all contributed to my development. I’m especially grateful to my parents—my dad, being my first coach, was the first person I spoke to after the match.
Entering the Top 30 at only 19 years old is remarkable. What does that achievement mean?
It’s quite amazing. I wasn’t focused on my ranking during matches, but now it feels rewarding. Being seeded for the Australian Open is a wonderful bonus!
What insights did you gain from your first ATP Tour final against Jannik Sinner last month?
Experiencing that final helped me with nerves. While I felt some jitters playing for my first title, having gone through that setting before made today easier to handle.
Given your mom’s teaching background and your dad’s profession as a lawyer, where do you think you would be without tennis?
Honestly? Probably not in a great place. I was quite set on tennis, so I feel lucky to be here.

How has having former World No. 2 Michael Chang on your team influenced your game this year?
I didn’t know him before he became a potential coach, but it’s been incredible to have his expertise. We’ve built a strong rapport, and his experience is invaluable to my growth.
Which moment stands out the most during your time with him?
Definitely today—this victory is the highlight of the year!
You briefly attended college before going pro. How has your journey differed from what you initially expected?
I didn’t have many expectations after leaving school; I just wanted to dive headfirst into tennis. Although I’ve had numerous firsts this year, nothing truly shocked me because I was simply ready to put in the work.
This victory marks a significant milestone in your career. How do you plan to celebrate?
Honestly, I’m still processing it. I haven’t eaten outside my hotel room all week! So, I think it’s time to do something special tonight.
