Canada’s quest for a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup finals has come to an end as they fell to Kazakhstan with a score of 3-1 in the qualifying match.
Kazakhstan secured victory by winning both of Saturday’s initial matches, effectively sealing the best-of-five women’s international tennis contest.
In the doubles showdown, Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva triumphed over Bianca Andreescu and Kayla Cross with a convincing 7-5, 6-1 finish.
Yulia Putintseva also played a pivotal role, edging out Andreescu in a grueling match that lasted three hours and 39 minutes, with a final score of 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4).
The competition heated up on Saturday, as both teams entered tied at 1-1 after splitting the initial singles matches.
With this victory, Kazakhstan moves on to the finals in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for September. Meanwhile, Canada, the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup champions, will aim for a comeback in the 2026 playoffs this coming November.
