“It was a challenging match,” Mertens reflected. “I started slow in the first set, but I found my rhythm.”

“I turned the match around effectively by playing more aggressively and approaching the net more often to shorten the rallies, and ultimately it paid off.”

Mertens is set to clash with Colombia’s Camila Osorio for a chance to reach the semifinals. Currently ranked World No. 32, Mertens has a perfect 2-0 record against the sixth-seeded Osorio, though this will be their first encounter on hard courts.

Remarkably, four out of the top six seeds have advanced to the quarterfinals.

Top-seed Anna Kalinskaya will face off against Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew for a coveted spot in the semifinals.

Kimberly Birrell also pulled off an electrifying comeback.

Birrell was down 2-5 against American Hailey Baptiste in the final set but surged ahead with five straight games, completing a thrilling comeback with a score of 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-5.

Birrell demonstrated her determination by breaking serve four times in a grueling two hour, 50-minute match.

Next, she’ll face fellow American Anne Li in a thrilling quest for a semifinals berth.
