Joao Fonseca is making waves on the ATP Tour, but few encounters are as daunting as facing the top competitors in consecutive tournaments. This 19-year-old Brazilian is set for another remarkable chapter as he confronts World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Miami Open presented by Itau on Friday. This clash follows an impressive performance against Jannik Sinner in Indian Wells, where Fonseca put up a fierce battle, taking the eventual champion to two nail-biting tie-break sets.
Alcaraz, who has suffered just one defeat this year and is setting the pace atop the Tour, presents a formidable challenge. Yet, Fonseca approaches this pivotal match with the audacity that has fueled his impressive ascent.
“I view this match as an incredible opportunity,” Fonseca shared with ATP Media. “Facing top players like Jannik and now Alcaraz significantly enhances my growth as a competitor. Each match reveals challenges… Even if I play my best, these athletes are so exceptional that they can turn the tables.”
“I felt great against Jannik and had chances to secure a set. I’m proud of my performance, but now my focus is on what it will take to clinch this match—whether that’s winning the first set or the second. With top-tier players, every detail matters.”
Those fine margins were glaringly clear in Indian Wells, where Fonseca had three set points in the opening set against Sinner but couldn’t capitalize, according to Infosys ATP Stats. Nevertheless, Fonseca departed Indian Wells with newfound confidence, believing he can not only measure up to the best but also challenge them effectively.

Facing Alcaraz will demand even more from Fonseca. Known for his intensity and all-court prowess, the Spaniard has set the standard in the sport. However, recent matches—highlighted by Daniil Medvedev’s victory over Alcaraz in Indian Wells—have proven that bold, aggressive tactics can yield tremendous rewards.
“I’ll approach Carlos similarly to how I did against Sinner,” Fonseca stated. “I’ll treat him as a Top 5 opponent—playing my best and showing him the respect he deserves. But I won’t show him that on the court.”
“I must have the mindset that I can win. That’s crucial. It’s about being courageous, enjoying the experience, and embracing the learning curve while on the court. But of course, my goal is to win.”
For Fonseca, the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals champion, this match in Miami is yet another chance to measure his skills against the elite of tennis. As he steps into the spotlight for his first Lexus ATP Head2Head showdown with Alcaraz, those “little details” will once again be pivotal.
