Life on the ATP Tour is often about sticking to a disciplined diet, but on Monday, three rising stars found themselves in a sugary paradise at the BNP Paribas Fortis European Open.
#NextGenATP’s Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca, local favorite Zizou Bergs, and Top 20 player Jiri Lehecka had a delightful assignment on media day: to create the ultimate cake in honor of the tournament’s 10-year milestone.
With Belgium’s rich pastry heritage, it’s no wonder Bergs took home the top prize, triumphing in the sweetest competition presided over by tournament director Dick Norman. This victory sets the stage for further success as the No. 39 in the PIF ATP Rankings gears up to face countryman Raphael Collignon in the first round.

On the other hand, World No. 45 Fonseca, who claimed the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals title, looks forward to his first ATP 250 match indoors later in the evening against Botic van de Zandschulp. After impressing at the Laver Cup with a win over Flavio Cobolli, Fonseca is keen to carry his momentum into this debut.
“This is my first visit to Belgium, and I’m truly captivated by the vibrant atmosphere and stunning sights,” Fonseca shared with europeanopen.be. “I’m thrilled to compete here. Despite a long season, I feel energetic!”
The trio also explored the iconic Atomium, a must-see in Brussels.
