Jannik Sinner kicked off his title defense at the Nitto ATP Finals with an impressive performance on Monday night, taking down a struggling Felix Auger-Aliassime with a score of 7-5, 6-1 in Turin. The Canadian faced significant challenges due to a left leg injury.

In this one-hour and 41-minute match, Sinner moved to 1-0 in the Bjorn Borg Group and is now on a remarkable 27-match indoor winning streak. Notably, he has not lost a set in the Nitto ATP Finals since his defeat to Novak Djokovic in the 2023 final.

“It was a challenging match until 6-5,” stated Sinner. “Auger-Aliassime served exceptionally well, and I had a few chances to break. But I managed to stay strong and push through. Winning the first match is crucial in this format, and I’m thrilled with the outcome.”

“I hope it’s nothing too severe for him. Wishing him a swift recovery and hoping he returns to full fitness quickly.”

With this victory at Inalpi Arena, Sinner maintains his pursuit of dethroning Carlos Alcaraz for the ATP Year-End No. 1 title presented by PIF. Currently, Sinner trails Alcaraz by 1,050 points, as Alcaraz began his Nitto ATP Finals journey with a win over Alex de Minaur the previous day.

In a rematch of their Rolex Paris Masters clash just a week prior, the duo fought through a tightly contested first set. Auger-Aliassime managed to fend off two break points at 3-2 and a set point at 5-4. However, he was unable to prevent Sinner’s crucial break in a 12th game where he seemed to be experiencing pain in his left leg.

After the first set, Auger-Aliassime took a medical timeout but, despite his valiant effort in returning to the Nitto ATP Finals after a two-year absence, he couldn’t recover after dropping his serve in the second set. He received treatment for his calf on court as the match progressed.

Sinner showcased his typical precision throughout the match, maintaining focus even as Auger-Aliassime dealt with physical issues. The second seed finished with an impressive 89% success rate (32/36) on points won from his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats. Following his victories against Auger-Aliassime in both Paris and Turin, Sinner now leads their Head2Head series 4-2.

“You need to remain consistent and balanced on the court against a physically struggling opponent,” Sinner explained. “It’s a different mental challenge, but it can work to your advantage if you handle it correctly.”
