Jacob Fearnley faced a formidable challenge in his opening match at the 2025 BNP Paribas Nordic Open, aiming to settle the score with Tallon Griekspoor. The British star emerged victorious on Monday, albeit after a nail-biting tie-break.

Ranked No. 79 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Fearnley pulled off a stunning upset against the fifth seed, Griekspoor, with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(5). This win on Day 1 of the indoor ATP 250 was particularly sweet as he avenged his second-round exit to the Dutch player at the same tournament last year. Fearnley once led 6-2 in the final set’s tie-break but faced a tense moment when he allowed Griekspoor to claw back, losing four consecutive points before cementing his victory after an intense two hours and 44 minutes.

“That was incredibly tough,” Fearnley reflected in his on-court interview. “I thought I was in control up until 5-3 when I was serving for it, and then I tightened up a bit. Tallon really stepped up his game when it mattered most. It was an absolute battle until the end. I respect him greatly, but I’m thrilled to advance.”

Despite being out-hit with a count of 32-34 in favor of Griekspoor, the 24-year-old’s serve proved crucial to his success, winning 78% (45/58) of the points played with his first delivery, as per Infosys ATP Stats.

With this victory, Fearnley has leveled his head-to-head record with Griekspoor at 1-1 and now sets his sights on a challenging second-round match against either of the Ymer brothers: Mikael or Elias, who will compete for the chance to face the Scottish player on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Miomir Kecmanovic broke his four-match losing streak on the ATP Tour, breezing past sixth seed Alexandre Muller. The Serbian World No. 49 is now slated to meet either Tomas Martin Etcheverry or qualifier Mark Lajal in the next round.
