Matteo Berrettini fought valiantly to thwart Taylor Fritz from advancing to his first Miami semifinal. Yet, ultimately, it wasn’t sufficient.

The Italian saved an impressive six match points during a nail-biting second set, pushing Fritz to a decisive final set. However, the fourth-ranked American ultimately claimed victory with a score of 7-5, 6-7(7), 7-5.

Fans can rest easy tonight, as the 27-year-old Fritz prepares to take on Czechia’s Jakub Mensik in the quest for a final spot this Friday in Miami.

“I had two choices: become frustrated and lose, and then regret all the missed opportunities, or I could regroup and secure the win,” Fritz reflected. “Now, I can enjoy a good night’s sleep without harping on those missed chances.”

With this victory, Fritz now boasts a flawless 5-0 record against Berrettini, capitalizing on three break conversions, including one that clinched the 6-5 lead in the final set.

The American is now headed to his sixth Masters 1000 semifinal, joining an elite group of only 12 American men to have reached the semifinals at both Indian Wells and Miami since 1985.
