Since making his pro debut in 2015, Frances Tiafoe has captured hearts worldwide, showcasing his infectious energy and competitive drive. This Thursday, he aims to harness that spirit as he faces World No. 2 Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open presented by Itau.
However, Tiafoe’s journey hasn’t always soared; at the beginning of the year, he was grappling with losses, ending 2025 on a five-match skid. Seeking improvement, the Maryland native enlisted a new team led by Mark Kovacs and engaged in meaningful discussions with those closest to him, including his long-term partner, Ayan Broomfield, whom he met at just 15 years old.
“A strong woman in your corner is essential to a man’s success,” Tiafoe shared with ATPTour.com last month. “They help keep you grounded… When you’re feeling lost, they can provide clarity and direction, helping you visualize your goals.”
“Sometimes, they believe in you even more than you do yourself. That support has made all the difference for me, so a huge shout-out to her.” Explore All Racquets & Relationships Features
As he climbs the ranks in the PIF ATP Rankings and reflects on his two US Open semi-finals, Broomfield has consistently been Tiafoe’s steadfast supporter.
Not every ATP Tour star’s partner can truly understand the emotional rollercoaster of thrilling victories and heartbreaking losses like Ayan Broomfield. As the 2019 NCAA women’s doubles champion alongside Gabby Andrews at UCLA, Broomfield climbed to No. 680 in the PIF WTA Rankings.
“Ayan was wonderful, but sometimes she seems to forget and starts giving advice like she’s a tennis guru,” Tiafoe joked. “But it’s great to come home and share my match experiences. This sport is incredibly challenging, and the lifestyle can be tough to grasp unless you’re living it.”
“She’s played a crucial role not just in my career, but in my life. Ayan has been my rock through it all, and I’m so grateful to have her by my side.”
Occasionally, Tiafoe and Broomfield hit the court together, though it’s not always seamless.
“I can’t stand it! She feels the same,” Tiafoe laughed. “Sometimes, I want to just practice rallies, but she insists on playing competitive points, always trying to cheat me! Yet, those moments are fun—especially once I retire, we can hit and joke around together. She still has a great shot.”
Supporting Broomfield in her endeavors is equally vital for Tiafoe. She’s cultivated her brand and, through initiatives like Ayan’s Aces and her foundation, she gives back to the community.
“I couldn’t be happier for her… Ultimately, it’s about her happiness,” Tiafoe said. “She’s made so many sacrifices for my career, and now she deserves to pursue her passions. Balancing our busy lives while thriving together is what it’s all about.”
