Leylah Fernandez decisively triumphed with a score of 6-2, 6-1 against her fellow Canadian Rebecca Marino in the opening round of the women’s singles at the US Open on Sunday.

The talented player from Laval, Quebec, recorded one ace and incurred three double faults, seamlessly converting all five of her break-point opportunities.

Marino, hailing from Vancouver, managed to hit two aces but also faced three double faults during the match, which lasted one hour and eight minutes.

Unfortunately, she was only able to capitalize on one out of her five break-point chances.

At 34 years old, Marino entered the competition after an impressive run through three qualifying rounds to secure her spot in the main draw.

Fernandez, seeded 31st, is set to clash with the winner of the match between Marie Bouzkova from Czechia and France’s Elsa Jacquemot in her next round.
