Indian Wells, California – Frances Tiafoe often juggles thoughts—sometimes a bit too many.
Such was the case on Friday night, as the American star found himself delaying his second-round match against Damir Dzumhur because of a forgotten essential piece of gear.
Indeed, it’s often said that a tennis player and his racquet are inseparable. In this instance, Tiafoe had to quietly inform his opponent that the match would be put on hold until his coach, David Witt, completed his urgent mission to fetch the right equipment.

Moments later, Tiafoe’s racquets were finally in hand. Using his Yonex Percept 97s—yes, all five of them!—he rallied to triumph over the Bosnian, winning 7-6(4), 7-6(7). Despite trailing 5-1 in the second set, the American managed to turn things around and secure his victory in straight sets. Next up, he will face Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki in the third round.
