Paris – Gael Monfils discovered firsthand the remarkable evolution of Jack Draper‘s skills on the court.
In an electrifying late-night showdown in Paris, the seasoned 38-year-old Frenchman unleashed everything in his arsenal, yet could only claim a single set from the dynamic 23-year-old.
Post-match, Monfils expressed deep admiration for Draper’s game.
“I have immense respect for him,” Monfils remarked. “His backhand is exceptionally fast. In his younger days, it was one of the best around.
Now, he has significantly enhanced his forehand, generating tremendous power while effectively controlling the ball’s trajectory. As a left-hander, he moves along the line with remarkable speed, which is quite rare and refreshingly impressive.”
Monfils went on to highlight Draper’s improved return game.
“His returns have really elevated,” he noted. “He positions himself cleverly, making sure the ball lands at optimal speed and placement. His progress in this aspect is astonishing.
“When Jack plays with such confidence, he’s incredibly challenging to counter.”
This is what our sport is all about.

In this intense contest on the slow clay courts under the night sky, Draper showcased his resilience against Monfils and the enthusiastic Parisian crowd. It further confirmed that the fifth-ranked Brit is primed for the main stage.
“Every point was a battle,” Monfils stated. “Nothing came easy. Draper’s returns were exceptional. He executed his game plan flawlessly. Honestly, I felt limited in my capabilities; I attempted to play my forehand down the line, but it missed the mark. He capitalized on that opportunity.”
While the final score may not have been what Monfils desired, anyone witnessing the match could see that he had little to regret. To perform at such a level at 38 years old, against a rising star 15 years his junior? Hats off, Lamonf!
Commentary from TNT’s Chris Eubanks referred to the second set as one of the finest displays of tennis he had ever seen.
“It was a fantastic night and a brilliant match,” Monfils remarked. “Above all, I felt a sense of joy, as he was brimming with confidence, yet I managed to give him a run for his money.”
