As Gael Monfils gears up to close the chapter on his illustrious career at the conclusion of 2026, his wife, Elina Svitolina, shares a deeply personal perspective on this emotional journey.

During the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, following her quarter-final triumph over Iga Swiatek, Svitolina opened up about Monfils’ decision to make this last season a memorable farewell. The 39-year-old Frenchman, celebrated for his electrifying style, commenced his run in the Californian desert with a victory but faced an early exit in the second round against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

For Svitolina, the weight of Monfils’ retirement loomed large long before the announcement.

“The hardest part was when he first shared these thoughts with me,” Svitolina revealed. “It was back in September when he expressed he was contemplating retirement. It hit hard because I’ve been following his journey since his early matches, both as a fan and now as his partner.”

The Ukrainian, who tied the knot with Monfils in 2021, has witnessed his career from both the sidelines and the intimate setting of their home.

“Being by his side and understanding the emotional complexities he faces is incredibly special,” Svitolina said. “It’s emotional for him, and I strive to provide unwavering support.”

The final season brings moments of reflection, but Svitolina emphasizes that her role is to simply be there as Monfils experiences the final stretch of his remarkable career.

“Honestly, my only role is to be present—sometimes to talk, other times to just sit in silence and savor this last year together,” Svitolina said.

Upcoming events on the calendar, particularly the European clay season and Roland Garros, are expected to hold a special significance, as Monfils has captivated French audiences for nearly two decades.

“I anticipate that the European tour, especially during Roland Garros, will be an emotional time for him,” she added. “It will be a profound experience for our family, woven with joy, as it marks an unforgettable chapter.”

For now, Svitolina stated that they are embracing the complex mix of emotions that accompany this pivotal moment.

“All we can do is navigate these emotions,” Svitolina shared. “We can’t escape the excitement and the range of feelings—both good and bad. It’s about embracing the moment and cherishing it as best as we can.”
