Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are stealing the spotlight at the 2025 Australian Open. Once fierce rivals with a history of four final showdowns here, they are now on the same side of the net, with the 24-time Grand Slam champion having the Scot as his coach this year in Melbourne.

During media day in Melbourne, Djokovic offered insights into what he admires most about Murray.

“Andy is a profound source of inspiration for many, including myself,” Djokovic expressed. “He has truly motivated countless individuals globally.” He reminisced about their first encounter when they were just 12 years old. “Having competed against me for 25 years, he possesses an in-depth understanding of my game—the strengths and areas for improvement.”

“Murray’s tennis IQ is exceptional,” he continued, acknowledging the Scot’s remarkable comeback after hip surgery, where he triumphed at multiple tournaments and demonstrated the true essence of a champion.

Djokovic highlighted the advantage of Murray’s recent tour experience, noting, “His proximity to the game, competing against top-tier players until recently, makes his insights incredibly valuable.”

The duo has already spent a significant amount of time together on the practice court—12 days to be exact. Djokovic appreciates how Murray’s presence motivates him, and they are gradually enhancing their communication.

“We’re still in the process of getting to know each other’s styles. We spent eight days together in the pre-season and have continued our work here in Melbourne,” he shared. “Murray inspires me to work hard on the court, and our conversations have been fruitful. He meticulously seeks to understand my needs, communicating with those around me for a deeper insight.”

It’s an exhilarating chapter for Team Djokovic as he aims for his historic 25th major title and 11th Australian Open victory, all while chasing his 100th career title and his 100th match win in Australia, having achieved 94 thus far.

Djokovic remarked on Murray’s natural coaching ability, stating, “He embodies an instinctual grasp of the game, knowing precisely when to contribute his thoughts. His keen observation skills ensure he speaks at the right moments.”

“With open communication, we’ve laid all our cards on the table, fostering a mutual understanding that empowers him to assist me effectively.”

Up next for Djokovic is a match against American wild card Nishesh Basavareddy in the opening round of Melbourne. The Australian Open kicks off on Sunday, January 12.
