In a thrilling showdown at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Novak Djokovic battled Jack Draper, with Draper ultimately claiming the victory 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).

Following the intense two-hour and 37-minute match, Djokovic opened up about his feelings.

“Right now, I’m left with a bitter taste after losing a match like this,” Djokovic stated during the post-match press conference. “However, I’m proud of my determination and effort on the court. That’s definitely a highlight for me.”

“What stands out is my resilience and will to fight. I lost to an exceptional player, and the match was incredibly balanced throughout the two and a half hours. Still, the disappointment lingers.”

A standout moment of the match occurred at the onset of the third set when Djokovic showcased his skill in a grueling 26-shot rally, featuring exquisite drop shots and world-class lobs. The point concluded with Djokovic on the ground, gasping for air.

Though he secured the point, Djokovic admitted it took a toll on him, leading to Drape breaking his serve just two games later.

“Winning that point came at a cost; I completely exhausted myself and didn’t find my rhythm again until late in the third set,” Djokovic explained. “There was a moment when Draper had a shaky game at 5-4, and the crowd was behind me, fueling my hopes. It was so close… just a few missteps on my part.”

The rivalry stands at 1-1 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head encounters. Draper is making his return after a lengthy left arm injury, yet Djokovic was impressed by the defending champion’s performance.

“Honestly, I didn’t see a significant drop in his level compared to before his injury. He played remarkably well. I’ve followed some of his matches since Dubai, and it’s clear he thrives in these conditions—he’s confident, fit, and an all-around great player. I wish him all the best for the remainder of the tournament,” Djokovic remarked.

As a five-time champion at Indian Wells, Djokovic boasts a season record of 8-2, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
