The Australian sensation made his return to the Australian Open on Monday in Melbourne. However, his journey was cut short as he lost in straight sets to England’s Jacob Fearnley (7-6(3) 6-3 7-6(2)), a match where he struggled with his physical condition, unable to unleash the explosive power he’s renowned for.

After 16 months post-wrist surgery, an ailment is still casting a shadow over Kyrgios as he contemplated that this might be his last opportunity to compete at the Australian Open.

“Honestly, I can’t envision myself competing in singles here again,” he reflected, while cherishing the vibrant atmosphere that John Cain Arena provided. “It was truly special to soak that in; a memorable moment.”

Despite facing an abdominal issue, Kyrgios demonstrated resilience by refusing to withdraw.

“I didn’t want to just walk away or retire,” he explained. “I was in physical pain. I have great respect for my opponent and the fans who waited hours to watch me play. Realistically, I can’t see myself playing a singles match here again.”

Nevertheless, Kyrgios remains optimistic about the year ahead and believes he can rediscover his form and conditioning.

“When you’re competing at the highest levels and struggling just to win sets, it’s challenging,” he confessed. “However, the year is long, and I’m trusting the process. I believe there are still exciting moments in store for me this year.”

But, undeniably, it wasn’t his ideal night.

“I’m okay with pushing through discomfort,” he stated. “But when I’m one of the top servers on tour and I’m getting outperformed in that department, it’s a tough pill to swallow. My average serve speed was below 200 (KPH). Without my serve, I’m not really a threat.”

Regardless of what the future holds for Kyrgios, he assures that he will have no regrets.

“No regrets,” he affirmed. “My journey is far from over, but I’ve had an incredible ride. I have experienced so much. Regret isn’t in my vocabulary.”

“Every experience has been a lesson. I strive to enjoy the journey, remain genuine, and relish this experience. It would be selfish to ask for more; I’ve achieved more than what many athletes can dream of.”

“No, I truly have no regrets.”
