Denis Shapovalov is on a remarkable roll this February, and Thursday was no exception.
The talented Canadian tennis star celebrated his eighth consecutive victory by defeating American Marcos Giron 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a thrilling match at the Mexican Open in Acapulco.
Ranked ninth, Shapovalov, who clinched the Dallas Open title earlier this month, is set to square off against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, currently ranked No. 48 in the world, in the semifinals this Friday evening. This marks the first time since 2022 that the Canadian will compete in an outdoor semifinal.
The tournament scene is notably competitive, with none of the top seven seeds making it to the final four.
Complications have hit the tournament hard, as three of the top five seeds withdrew or retired earlier this week due to stomach ailments.
With this recent win, Shapovalov, currently at No. 32 in global rankings, has finally secured his first victory over Giron in their three encounters, having lost to him earlier this year in Adelaide, Australia.
Hailing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Shapovalov stands a chance to climb as high as No. 22 in the rankings if he captures the ATP Tour 500 event title.
