The celebrated former Grand Slam champion Juan Martin del Potro is set to grace the Delray Beach Open (DBO) for the first time in six years, participating in the tournament’s Legends event during the much-anticipated Opening Weekend.

Del Potro will compete alongside tennis legends, including the iconic Bob and Mike Bryan—the all-time greatest doubles team with an impressive 16 Grand Slam titles and six DBO wins. The lineup also features French Open champions Luke and Murphy Jensen, as well as Delray singles champions Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, Tommy Haas, and Xavier Malisse. This star-studded Legends Opening Weekend is set for February 7-9 and will coincide with the qualifying rounds for the ATP event.
The ATP tournament will follow from February 10-16, featuring two-time defending champion and world No. 4 Taylor Fritz, alongside last year’s runner-up No. 11 Tommy Paul.
Confirmed participants also include world No. 35 Brandon Nakashima, No. 39 Matteo Arnaldi, and past champions Reilly Opelka and Kei Nishikori.
“I’m really looking forward to returning to Delray Beach, a place that holds a special significance in my career,” expressed the 36-year-old Del Potro. “I have such fond memories, especially my title win in 2011. I can’t wait to reconnect with the fans and the organizing team.”
In 2009, at just 20 years old, Del Potro claimed victory over five-time defending champion Roger Federer to win the US Open after defeating Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, setting the stage for what seemed to be a bright future. However, a wrist injury sidelined him throughout most of 2010.
The Delray Beach Open marked his first title upon returning in 2011. Del Potro graced the tournament for four more years, with his last appearance in 2019 while ranked No. 4 in the world, and he proudly stands tied for sixth on the tournament’s all-time match wins list with 14.
Over his illustrious career, Del Potro amassed 22 titles, achieved a remarkable ranking of No. 3 in the world, and earned an Olympic silver medal at the 2016 Rio Games. Although he officially retired from tennis last December in an emotional exhibition against the legendary Novak Djokovic, his last ATP Tour match was in 2022 due to a knee injury.
