MELBOURNE, Australia — Daniil Medvedev has incurred a hefty fine of $76,000 following his explosive reactions involving a camera and his racket during the opening rounds of the Australian Open.

The details of the fines were disclosed on Sunday by the Australian Open organizers, just two days after Medvedev faced a shocking defeat in the second round.

The 2021 U.S. Open champion made headlines by targeting a small camera positioned at the net, striking it multiple times with his racket during a grueling five-set match against Kasidit Samrej, a player ranked 418th. This outburst cost him $10,000 for his actions in the first round.

In his second-round match against 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien, Medvedev’s frustrations boiled over once again, resulting in a point penalty and a staggering $66,000 fine for several code violations.

After losing serve to trail 4-3 in the second set due to a lob from Tien that gracefully landed near the baseline, Medvedev angrily hurled his equipment to the sidelines, sliding it across the court until it collided with an advertising board near his bench.

His display of frustration didn’t stop there; Medvedev was seen striking a ball against the back wall, knocking over a camera behind the baseline, and even punching his racket bag. He expressed his irritation about receiving consecutive foot faults, which ultimately led to a costly double fault during a tense second-set tiebreaker.

The intense second-round match, lasting nearly five hours, concluded just before 3 a.m. on Friday morning.

Seeded No. 5 at Melbourne Park, Medvedev has been a finalist in three of the last four years, including last year’s tournament.

This tournament marked Medvedev’s first appearance of the season, coinciding with the birth of his second child, yet the 28-year-old Russian struggled to showcase his best form.
