In an exciting turn of events at the Australian Open, Ottawa’s own Gabriela Dabrowski and her New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe have advanced to the third round of the women’s doubles competition.

The dynamic second-seeded pair triumphed in a thrilling match against Britain’s Maia Lumsden and Czechia’s Anna Siskova, clinching victory with a hard-fought three-set score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Dabrowski and Routliffe, who previously claimed the US Open title in 2023 and were finalists at Wimbledon in 2024, showcased their prowess with an impressive 30 winners compared to their opponents’ 14. They also dominated on second serve points, achieving a remarkable 72% success rate against just 45%.

Last year, they made a strong impression in Melbourne, making it to the semifinals before being stopped by Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko and Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok.

Meanwhile, Leylah Fernandez faced a setback in singles, bowing out in the third round after a 6-4, 6-2 loss to third-seeded American Coco Gauff.

However, Fernandez, hailing from Laval, Quebec, remains in the hunt for glory in doubles alongside her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok. They are gearing up to take on Italy’s Camilla Rosatello and Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian in the second round.

Dabrowski and Routliffe’s next challenge will be against the winner of the clash between Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia and Germany’s Laura Siegemund, along with Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti and Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.

At 32 years old, Dabrowski boasts a remarkable achievement of winning the Australian Open mixed doubles trophy in 2018 alongside Croatia’s Mate Pavic.

Currently ranked No. 3 in women’s doubles globally, Dabrowski recently opened up about her courageous battle with breast cancer treatment last year, inspiring many with her resilience.
