LONDON — Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool made history as the first all-British duo in 89 years to clinch the men’s Wimbledon doubles title, overcoming Rinky Hijikata and David Pel with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (3) on Saturday at the iconic Centre Court.

This victory marks the first time since 1936 that British players have triumphed in this category, with Pat Hughes and Raymond Tuckey holding the previous title.

“Hearing that year really puts it into perspective,” Glasspool remarked during an interview on the court.

The pair enjoyed a remarkable grass-court season, having also secured championship wins at Queen’s and Eastbourne leading up to Wimbledon.

With high hopes surrounding the fifth-seeded team as they entered Wimbledon, Cash and Glasspool certainly delivered on expectations.

“We felt immense pressure,” Cash admitted. “But achieving what everyone has been anticipating feels absolutely surreal.”

This match marked the inaugural Grand Slam final for both Cash and Glasspool.

Hijikata was on the hunt for his second Grand Slam doubles title, having previously won the 2023 Australian Open alongside Jason Kubler.

Pel revealed that he and Hijikata had not even met until they arrived at Wimbledon. “We had our first conversation on the very day the tournament kicked off,” the Dutch player shared.
