It was never meant to be his moment.
Yet, Canada’s own Gabriel Diallo has advanced to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells! His thrilling victory against China’s Zhang Zhizhen came to a nail-biting finish, with scores of 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7) lighting up the courts on Thursday in sunny California.
At just 23 years old, Diallo, who hails from Montreal and holds the 88th position in global rankings, had initially faced disappointment, losing his last qualifying match. However, fortune smiled upon him as he was granted entry into the main draw as a lucky loser.
Making the most of this unexpected opportunity, Diallo showcased his skill against the 51st-ranked Zhang, delivering a match loaded with competitive spirit. With two powerful aces to his name, he converted two out of nine break points while maintaining composure with only three double faults.
His next challenge will be against the 21st-ranked French talent Arthur Fils, who awaits after receiving a bye in the first round.
Interestingly, Diallo has a slight edge in their previous encounter, having triumphed in their only match at last year’s U.S. Open.
