It appears that an all-Canadian showdown in the quarterfinals at the Adelaide International won’t be happening after all.

Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, and Montreal’s own Felix Auger-Aliassime were set for a thrilling face-off, provided they both emerged victorious in their matches on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the Canadians ended the day with a split 1-1 record.

Shapovalov experienced a setback, falling to Marcos Giron of the United States with a score of 7-5, 6-2, following an impressive upset against the No. 9 seed Zhang Zhizhen of China in his opening match.

On a brighter note, the fifth-seeded Auger-Aliassime made a commendable comeback, clinching a hard-fought victory over France’s Arthur Cazaux with scores of 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.

As they head into their quarterfinal face-off, Auger-Aliassime holds a favorable record of 4-1 against Giron, setting the stage for an exciting match.

This ATP Tour 250 event serves as a vital warm-up for the upcoming Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, which kicks off this weekend.
