HALLE (WESTFALEN), Germany — Alexander Bublik achieved a remarkable victory over Daniil Medvedev, clinching the Halle Open title with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Sunday, marking his second triumph at this prestigious event.
This win was particularly sweet, as it ended a six-match losing streak against Medvedev.
“Daniil, I felt like I was destined to face you endlessly without a single set victory to my name, but today is a different story,” Bublik expressed after the match. “You’re an exceptional champion, and it’s an honor to overcome you here. Wishing you all the success in the future!”
The talented player from Kazakhstan, who also captured the grass-court title in 2023, becomes only the third individual to win this championship more than once, joining the ranks of three-time winner Yevgeny Kafelnikov and the legendary 10-time champion, Roger Federer.
Bublik kicked off the match with an impressive 12-point winning streak in the first set. Although the second set proved a bit more challenging with five double-faults, Medvedev faltered with a series of backhand errors during the tiebreak, allowing Bublik to capitalize and conclude the match in a swift 81 minutes.
Bublik, who previously triumphed over top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the second round, dedicated this significant achievement to his wife and son, who were unable to attend due to illness.
“This victory is for you; I know you’re watching from home,” he stated warmly.
Medvedev, who triumphed over local favorite Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, found himself in his first final since falling to Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells in March 2024.
“It was a better week than we anticipated, yet the ending isn’t the most uplifting,” Medvedev reflected. “We’ll strive to improve next time.”
